Navin Chandra: Managing Director

Navin ChandraNavin Chandra graduated from St. Stephens College, Delhi in 1968, and went on to do his Mater's degree in Medieval Indian History from the same college. On completing his studies he started working for Hindustan Milkfood Manufacturers, the makers of Horlicks. Joining as a management trainee he went through an intensive two year programme that encompassed production, administration, sales, product management and marketing and also spent time with Hindustan Thompson Associates who were responsible for the advertising and publicity campaigns then being run for Horlicks. On completion of his training, Navin Chandra assumed responsibility for sales in western India.

Joining the DTC in 1974, Navin underwent a comprehensive training schedule to learn diamond sorting and valuation and in 1976 joined the sales department as an assistant on the Indian desk. In 1978 he was selected to go to Bombay for opening the Hindustan Diamond office with Ian White. In preparation for this he underwent further training with leading sightholders in India, focused on assortments for manufacturing and cleaving. He opened the HDC office with Ian White in 1979.

In 1981 Navin went as a rough diamond buyer to Sierra Leone in West Africa and was still in overseas buying when he was offered the chance to run the Indian desk in the Sales Department in London. Navin did this job with great distinction and was responsible for developing DTC's business with its Indian sightholders and for encouraging the DTC to sell more to India directly.

After further postings to HDC and Diamdel Antwerp, Navin was sent to run HDC, Bombay for two years. However, he stayed in India for six years and is still well remembered by all HDC clients for his understanding of the Indian business and for his skills in grasping the needs and requirements of his clients.

In 1992 after six very successful years in HDC, Navin returned to London and assumed charge of the Mixed Gem sales and was responsible for sales to the Antwerp Indians. Subsequently he was also made responsible for worldwide sales to Preparers and was given overall responsibility for Indian sightholders as well.

With the coming of Supplier of Choice in 2001, Navin was responsible for two major DTC sightholders in Antwerp.

Joining Goldie International in July 2003, Navin said he was delighted to be able to continue his relationship with Goldie's clients and with many other friends in the Diamond trade and with his ex colleagues in the DTC.
